Your New Year: Well-meant resolutions becoming a thing of the past
It’s just a couple of weeks into the new year and you know that those well-meant resolutions are slowly becoming a thing of the past. Two things that have gone on since the start of the new year: 1) You never started or 2) Your lack of personal discipline has caused you to run out of steam.
No judgment or condemnation over here; I have been in that situation. You are like millions of people who, after starting a well thought out plan, falls short after two-three weeks. We all have good intentions every year, but life happens! Normal duties that continue into the following year, become detours that lead us back to our old schedules and habits. We may feel like Cinderella on January 1st, but the stress of transforming one’s life makes the entire process a real chore. Now with a couple of weeks into the new year, it seems that once again it is too tough to get started; so, you think about putting the transformation off until next year.
The other common thing is to experience burnout. Things like working out only last a few days because, after a really good workout, you feel like crap. So, you take a break the next day. Then, before you know it, you have not been to the gym in a week, you are still carrying around those extra holiday pounds and you feel discouraged; so, you put off getting in shape. Working on your finances falters by the mid-January because all the banknotes of the holiday catch up with you. So once again, life hits you in the gut and knocks the wind out of you. Once again, you put off a much-needed transformation for another year.
We all want to transform and get better. We all want to have that “go hard or go home” mentality. Unfortunately, meaningful results Do not happen overnight! A real transformation requires discipline and consistency. The results that we really want require us to change learned behaviors. Changing behavior doesn’t come with immediate fixes and enthusiasm. It comes when we develop routines that exist during the times of unpleasant situations and that thrive during times of intense pressure.
The key to living up to your new year’s resolution is not focusing on the outward results; instead, it’s deliberately developing new habits. Therefore, I suggest the ABC method of transforming your behavior to create new habits.
A-Stands For Action or Event — Which simply means do something today. Stop writing about it, Talking About It and Googling About It. Get up and do something about it.
B-Stands for Bite the Elephant. Way too often we are trying to consume everything in one setting. Reduce your resolution into a small daily task that will lead to greater success. Small chunks in a consistent manner will consume more of your goals than large bites taken in a few settings.
C-Consistency at All Cost. Transformation and habit development happens daily.

An example of how the model might be used to describe a particular situation is given below:We all want to get better; but, we have to make daily small deposits towards our goal. Keep in mind that each new action becomes a habit, and each habit becomes a way of life.Take small steps and you will find that at the end of the day, you are a lot further along than what you would ever have imagined.
